ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Part I: Workshops
Safe Moves has a multifaceted approach to accomplish the goals of
educating children about pedestrian, vehicle and bicycle safety.
Workshops and traffic safety rodeos are conducted for
kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students.
Workshops are conducted by a Safe Moves
professional instructor and include discussions about traffic
safety as it pertains to their grade level. In addition, students
are involved with the educational process by participating in a
demonstration that includes their own perceptions and reactions to
hazards created by vehicles. The lesson plans are designed to
accommodate the abilities; cognitive learning skills of each age
group and to be relevant to the diverse communities in California.
Part II: “Safe Moves City”
The
traffic safety rodeo course is an interactive exercise that allows
students to learn about safety by walking and bicycling through a
miniature city called “Safe Moves City”. “Safe Moves City”
consists of streets, sidewalks, intersections, crosswalks, traffic
signals, traffic signs, residential areas, business districts,
cars, trucks, buses and a railroad track with signals, crossing
gate and train. “Safe Moves City” is designed to simulate the
diverse traffic environments in Los Angeles and to create “problem
solving” experiences for each grade level.
Under the supervision of Safe Moves staff,
students will walk and/or ride a bicycle through “Safe Moves
City” while trying to avoid over twenty (20) traffic hazards.
Safe Moves staff evaluates the students’ performance and
discusses the results with each teacher and his/her staff.
Safe Moves conducts programs in English,
Spanish, Armenian and several Asian dialects (when needed) to
accommodate the needs of each school and the students. When other
languages are spoken, Safe Moves works with each individual school
to arrange for the appropriate translation.
